Do you truly understand antioxidants in skincare?

You might hear the word antioxidants sometimes. Right? But might not truly understand what they are and what they do?

Before understanding the meaning of antioxidants, I would like to bring your attention to "free radicals". Free radicals are molecules that can cause damage to different components in cells, such as the DNA, proteins etc. When we are young and healthy, our body does a pretty good job of dealing with these free radicals. But, if we are not eating healthy, smoke, use of chemicals or are exposed to a lot of environmental sources, the risk for cellular and organ damage goes up.

Free radicals damage cells over time, a connective tissue called collagen gets weaker with the exposure, and as a result, our skin gets more wrinkles. So here comes the role of antioxidants. Antioxidants are free-radical fighters. It is vital to maintain the balance between antioxidants and the oxidants present in the body for good health. When that balance is lost— we experience too many free radicals like premature aging of the skin, hyperpigmentation, triggering inflammatory conditions like eczema and acne, as well as skin cancers.

Boosting up the antioxidant defences can help in reducing the risk of free radical exposure. Eating healthy foods, especially colourful fruits, and veggies may help combat some of the free radical damage. Nutrients such as vitamin C, beta-carotene, selenium, and vitamin E may help prevent or reduce the damage caused by free radicals, so they're called ANTIOXIDANTS. These nutrients are found in a variety of foods, but they're highest in plant sources.

Other than dietary benefits, antioxidants are beneficial active ingredients in skincare products as well. Generally, antioxidants interrupt oxidation reactions and prevent the effects of oxygen radicals (e.g. peroxides). Antioxidants are useful in two ways:

*In preventing degradation of natural ingredients (proteins, sugars, lipids) in the skincare or cosmetic products.

*Protect the skin cells from being damaged and slow down the aging process. Antioxidants have been shown to boost the skin's radiance, minimize age spots, sun spots, and fine lines.
